I saw a post on stack overflow where you said that you were just beginning to make iPhone apps. I would like to try and start making some myself. I was wondering if you knew of a good guide, website, how-to book, etc where I could learn how from scratch. I am computer literate but do not know how to program. I am hoping that since you just started you would have some helpful hints as to how to get started. I have a new 13″ 128GB Macbook Air to work with, is there any other hardware needed? If you don’t have time to help I understand. If that is the case, could you please just reply with “sorry I can’t”?

Thank you in advance for you time

      Hi Jay,

I recommend that you start with iPhone Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide. This walks you through the basics of Objective-C and gets you started writing apps quickly. It doesn’t cover everything under the sun, but once you get going you can make use of the on-line documentation and, of course, stackoverflow.

All you will need is to download the latest version of XCode from Apple. This is free, but to put any apps you build onto a device, you will need to register as a developer and pay Apple $99/year. There is a lot you can do with just the simulator (included with XCode), so I’d recommend just starting there and seeing how it goes.

If you get stuck, just search around on stackoverflow for help or post a question.

      Good luck!
